Minority Voting Group Slams Common Cause’s Congressional Maps (City & State)

You would think that Common Cause, the good government group that is drawing its own non-gerrymandered redistricting maps, would be on the same page with minority voting rights groups.

After all, both share the goals of increasing minority representation and not breaking up communities of interest.

But in a legal memo submitted over the weekend to Magistrate Judge Roanne Mann, Andrew Beveridge, a professor who is considered one of the state’s foremost experts on redistricting, really lays into the good government group’s proposed congressional maps.

All the world’s a stage, and redistricting in New York is the main act

Sen. Martin Dilan was fidgeting throughout a recent meeting of the legislative task force on redistricting.

It was one of the last of the group’s dozens of public hearings before drafting new lines for election districts. Dilan, representing the Senate Democratic Conference on the task force, was upset about a memo from a Senate Republican lawyer that advocated for a 63rd Senate seat. The memo had been placed on the LATFOR website late on a Friday, with no Democratic input.

Will Skelos Support Latino-Majority Senate Districts In Long Island? (City and State)

Heading into a contentious campaign season, Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos has made it a priority to court the state’s Latino population in the hopes of shoring up votes for his fragile conference.

But when it comes to redistricting communities in his own backyard, Democrats claim Skelos’ love for Latinos comes up short.
