A veto by Cuomo may save redistricting (LI Herald)

Looking at the current New York state government, you could almost forget that until recently it was an ineffective embarrassment, a decidedly non-functional democracy.

Since Andrew Cuomo was elected governor, things have been looking up in our state. There’s been ethics reform and mandate relief; same-sex couples are finally allowed to marry here; the 2 percent tax cap should help force more modest spending levels; and in 2011 there was the rarest of occurrences in Albany — legislators balanced the budget and passed it on time.

They should, because the way redistricting is being done in Albany subverts the public interest, according to the Citizens Union’s “Reshaping New York” research and policy analysis issued last month. And we agree.

Court OKs GOP’s redistricting map (LI Herald)

Posted by: admin  /  Tags:

In a 3-2 decision last Thursday, New York State Appellate Division judges upheld new boundaries drawn by Nassau Republican lawmakers for the county’s 19 legislative districts. If the state Court of Appeals rules in favor of the Republican plan on Aug. 24, the GOP’s legislative map will reshape a number of districts, including those covering the Five Towns, Elmont, Baldwin and Merrick-Bellmore.
