But since the lines are drawn by members of political parties who would like to see their parties hold on to control of their respective chambers, they tend not to draw lines that make practical sense to those in those neighborhoods across New York.
The system has always been a political. A democrat in the Assembly would like to see areas more democratic voters in their district. On the Senate side, the search for republican strongholds is paramount. The result? Districts that often take on strange shapes as each party desperately reaches for an advantage.

The state’s Legislative Task Force on Demographic Research and Reapportionment is responsible for making those changes and the group held a public hearing in Binghamton Wednesday.
Some of the concerns include the possible misrepresentation of districts. The task force says it will take these concerns into consideration before making a decision.
