Debate over redistricting (YNN)

Senate Republicans and Assembly Democrats this week are huddling in private week to finalize a reshaping of New York’s political map. It’s part of the once-in-a-decade redistricting process for Congressional, Assembly and Senate lines. While state districts are nearly completed, where House districts will go, and which two will be eliminated, is still be worked out.

Hearings on state redistricting (YNN)

Lawmakers are trying to do what might be considered an easy task. Take new census numbers and begin to draw up new boundaries for state legislative and congressional districts.

But since the lines are drawn by members of political parties who would like to see their parties hold on to control of their respective chambers, they tend not to draw lines that make practical sense to those in those neighborhoods across New York.

The system has always been a political. A democrat in the Assembly would like to see areas more democratic voters in their district. On the Senate side, the search for republican strongholds is paramount. The result? Districts that often take on strange shapes as each party desperately reaches for an advantage.

Redistricting heads to court (YNN)

NEW YORK STATE — The stakes are huge in the case known as Little v. LATFOR. Senate Republicans were in court Tuesday challenging the 2010 law that requires prisoners to be counted as residents of their last known address. The measure has the potential to reshape how upstate districts are formed and could permanently shift the balance of power to the downstate region.

“It’s interesting that this piece of particular legislation passed solely with Democratic support. Only Democrats voted for it,” said Senate GOP Attorney David Lewis.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — New York’s population has changed and that means it is time for the legislative lines to be re-drawn. It is a process that happens every ten years by law.

The state’s Legislative Task Force on Demographic Research and Reapportionment is responsible for making those changes and the group held a public hearing in Binghamton Wednesday.

Some of the concerns include the possible misrepresentation of districts. The task force says it will take these concerns into consideration before making a decision.

NEW YORK STATE — As state lawmakers slog through the contentious process of redrawing their own legislative boundaries, they now plan to follow a 2010 law requiring inmates be counted as residents of their last known address, not the prison they live in. The move could have broad implications for the size and scope of state and federal districts in prison heavy upstate.
